Applications Now Being Accepted for Red Bull Soapbox Race in Atlanta

July 13th, 2015 | Events, News

Red Bull Soapbox Race will cruise into Atlanta on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015. This unique non-motorized racing event challenges experienced racers and amateurs alike to design and build outrageous, human-powered soapbox dream machines and compete against the clock in a downhill race. Each hand-made machine is fueled by creativity, showmanship and the need for speed.

The South’s most witty and innovative teams will race each other down the twists and turns of North Avenue. Red Bull Soapbox Race is a single day of thrills, so the number of contestants will be limited. Teams are chosen based on creativity, technical feasibility of the craft build, craft safety and originality. Those interested in participating will need to submit their entries by August 1, 2015 by visiting redbull.com/soapboxATL. The event is free to participate and attend.

Red Bull Soapbox Race has previously taken place in Atlanta in 2009 and 2012. The October 24th event will be the 103rd Red Bull Soapbox Race to ever take place, with the first U.S. race held in St. Louis in 2006. The global event dates back to 2000, when it first took place in Belgium, and has since visited 46 countries. Cincinnati will  also host Red Bull Soapbox in 2015.

Ocean Market, a Parisian-inspired bistro located in Downtown Atlanta, is excited to welcome the second installment of its local artist series, featuring work from Atlanta-based, encaustic artist Penny Treese.

Kicking off with an opening night event on Thursday, February 26, 2015, the evening will feature a live encaustic art demonstration by the artist from 7 to 9 p.m. As art-lovers peruse Treese’s work, which will also be available for purchase, they can enjoy complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres created by Chef Shane McIntosh of Ocean Catering Company and Ocean Market.

Observing the way our culture treats aging as an evil to avoid, Treese’s technique begins with an out-of-focus photograph of a nude woman on thin paper. She distresses the image with water, wine, coffee, salt and cold—natural elements that age the human body. Finally, applying heat to layers of molten unbleached beeswax and vivid pigment, Treese creates a beauty and integrity from her “aged” work—ultimately answering the question “Are beauty and aging contradictions in terms” with an empathic and absolute No.

In a relatively short time, Treese has been accepted and won awards in a number of juried exhibitions including, most recently, winning Best of Show in a group show and competition at the Decatur Market and Gallery, juried by internationally renowned art critic Bill Arnett. In addition to the numerous private and public collections to display her work, Ocean Market is proud to be the latest host of Treese’s most recent collection. With its 33rd anniversary on the horizon this February, The Punchline Comedy Club has set it sights on finding a new home. Prior to moving in April 2015, Atlanta’s oldest comedy club will host a whirlwind of special events and shows, surprise guests and much more.

Since the first show in 1982, more than 10,000 shows have been presented, and thousands of comedians, both professional and amateur, have appeared in the original showroom at 280 Hilderbrand Drive. Some of comedy’s all-time legends and most recognizable names including Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, Dave Chappelle, Larry The Cable Guy, Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy, Amy Schumer, Bill Burr, Brian Regan and dozens more have performed at The Punchline – creating a rich history and tradition that is unmatchable by any comedy club in Atlanta. It is regularly cited as one of the Top Ten Comedy Clubs in the US.

“It’s the right time for this move. A variety of things lined up with redevelopment coming in Sandy Springs and some exciting things happening around Metro Atlanta.  It’s hard not to love your original showroom and all of the memories from over the years; nevertheless, we’re excited for the opportunity a new location offers that will incorporate the best aspects of the current club with some new features,” says Jamie Bendall, co-owner of The Punchline Comedy Club.

“I was a part of the Punchline on the first day back in 1982, and this location has been a great chapter in our story, but we are looking forward to writing the next chapter to cover the next thirty years,” added Chris DiPetta, one of the other current co-owners of The Punchline Comedy Club.

Leading up to the move, the club will host an impressive lineup of talent so both comedy lovers and comedians alike can celebrate the iconic original showroom. Additionally, The Punchline team will have pop-up shows throughout the summer at different locations and anticipate producing shows at temporary venues until they have secured a new permanent home. More details to be announced in the coming weeks.

For the full show schedule and most up to date information visit, www.punchline.com. Stay connected at via Twitter and Instagram at @punchlinecomedy and Facebook at www.facebook.com/ThePunchline.
