November 4th, 2015 | Events | 0 Comments

Ocean Market, a Parisian-inspired bistro located in Downtown Atlanta, will host an opening for its Local Artist Series on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 during a special cocktail celebration for artist Chris Strawbridge from 7 to 9 p.m. Open to the public, guests are invited to mix and mingle with the featured artist as they sip on complimentary libations and enjoy bites created by Chef Shane McIntosh of Ocean Market and Ocean Catering Company while perusing Strawbridge’s work, which will also be available for purchase.  Co-owners Chef Shane and Sage Stewart rotate works from local artists of various mediums every few months. The event is free to attend and open to the public. For more information about the opening night reception visit www.Facebook.com/OceanMarketAtlanta.

The Atlanta-based artist has shown his artwork in multiple art galleries and festivals throughout Atlanta and his artwork hangs in commercial buildings, restaurants and in private collections. Enjoying a 30-year long career within architecture and interior design firms has influenced how Strawbridge’s incorporates line, form, space and composition. Working mostly in acrylics, grease crayon, and graphite on canvas, his art has been described as architectural, minimalistic, abstract, and sometimes even, whimsical.

OCEAN MARKET CONTINUES ITS LOCAL ARISTS SERIES WITH ENCAUSTIC ARTIST PENNY TREESE

February 23rd, 2015 | Events | 0 Comments

Ocean Market, a Parisian-inspired bistro located in Downtown Atlanta, is excited to welcome the second installment of its local artist series, featuring work from Atlanta-based, encaustic artist Penny Treese.

Kicking off with an opening night event on Thursday, February 26, 2015, the evening will feature a live encaustic art demonstration by the artist from 7 to 9 p.m. As art-lovers peruse Treese’s work, which will also be available for purchase, they can enjoy complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres created by Chef Shane McIntosh of Ocean Catering Company and Ocean Market.

Observing the way our culture treats aging as an evil to avoid, Treese’s technique begins with an out-of-focus photograph of a nude woman on thin paper. She distresses the image with water, wine, coffee, salt and cold—natural elements that age the human body. Finally, applying heat to layers of molten unbleached beeswax and vivid pigment, Treese creates a beauty and integrity from her “aged” work—ultimately answering the question “Are beauty and aging contradictions in terms” with an empathic and absolute No.

In a relatively short time, Treese has been accepted and won awards in a number of juried exhibitions including, most recently, winning Best of Show in a group show and competition at the Decatur Market and Gallery, juried by internationally renowned art critic Bill Arnett. In addition to the numerous private and public collections to display her work, Ocean Market is proud to be the latest host of Treese’s most recent collection.
